About the project
The 350 Reasons quilt was initiated as part of the first international day of action for the climate on Oct. 24th 2009. Organized by 350.org, people from nearly every country on Earth came together in their communities and as a world community to create images of 350 and lift that number into the imaginations and awareness of humanity. The quilt was designed to connect people and what they care about most. Each square is something someone loves about life on Earth-- one personal reason to get involved solving the climate crises. On Oct 24th the quilt, which had about 120 squares (so it was technically the 120 reasons quilt), was displayed in San Francisco at Dolores Park and at the Ferry Plaza to inspire people with reasons-- from coral reefs to newborn babies, penguins to bicycle rides-- the turn the climate crises around and create safe and vital world for our future generations (of all life).
Since Oct 24th, the quilt, which is based in Petauma, CA, has been displayed in several places around California as well as a trip to Mississippi to inspire people there. If you would like more information on having the quilt at your farmer's market, local park or school, please be in touch.
The quilt currently has over 200 squares and it is still growing! Please consider making a square yourself, and spreading the word to your friends and neighbors!

Why a quilt?
In the sewing world, patchwork quilts are traditionally made out of the leftover pieces of fabric from other projects. The 350 Reasons Quilt patches together different bits of people's lives and loves into something beautiful. In the ecology world, "patchwork" refers to the fragmentation of healthy ecosystems, as when a freeway or housing development divides a marsh or meadow into separate pieces. Patchworking in ecology creates breaks in the cycling of life through places. As a species, humanity lives cut off from our ecosystems and the cycles we impact. The 350 Reasons quilt is a metaphor for stitching us back into the web of life. The quilt reconnects us with what we love, with each other, and what each other love, mending the cycling of our appreciation and interdependence that life depends on us to restore.
