What is 350?
350 is the most important number on Earth. It is the number our top climate scientists have determined is the highest safe amount of carbon dioxide the atmosphere can hold (in parts per million). At or below 350, the atmosphere and ecosystems work together in exquisite balance to keep the temperature of our home planet safe for life. Above 350, the atmosphere and ecosystems of Earth cannot continue regulating global temperature and support life as we have known it.
The atmosphere is currently at 392 parts per million carbon dioxide, which is why, around the planet, we are all experiencing "freaky" weather: melting glaciers and icecaps, storms, floods, droughts and disrupted seasons. Returning our atmosphere and our planet to safety-- the 350-- is the greatest challenge humanity now faces.
The science is difficult to accept. We want to keep living our lives as usual, not thinking about all the ways we participate in unbalancing the atmosphere, or how an unbalanced atmosphere will threaten our lives. Understanding how our daily actions effect something as huge as the planet has been easy to avoid. Now, in our lifetimes, we don't have a choice. We need to open our minds and our hearts to understanding how much we have to lose and how much we have to engage-- with everything we've got-- in solving the climate crises.
The quilt was designed to help people engage the climate crises through choosing one thing they love about life-- a reason to add to the infinite inspiring reasons to work together to change the story of our times from one of inevitable tragedy to one of unbounded energy, commitment, community, and resilience.
